When the word “California” rolls off the tongue it has a transformative power- infusing the body with the sensation of basking in golden sunshine while rushing down Pacific Coast Highway at top speed in a convertible. Or perhaps it’s the sensation of millions of grains of sand creeping in between one’s toes while ruminating over the crash of the Pacific Ocean. The utterance of “California,” even more specifically “Los Angeles,” is loaded with possibility. It’s a subject, a verb, a destination and a state of mind. It’s an incubator of dreams, fascinated by the spectacle of moving images, laced with diverse cultures of the celebrity and notorious kinds and intrigued with voyeurism. Each artist presented in the Special Projects Curation- 7×7, Sara Clarken, Michelle Carla Handel, Emmett Methven, Chris Niemi, Lluy Rodrigues, Quam Odunsi, The Current Sea and YoMeryl– calls Los Angeles home and it is through the lens of this city that they have found a medium through which to communicate their vision.
