Modern Art Curator Montserrat Albores Gleason

Montserrat Albores Gleason is an independent curator and co-founder of the curatorial and investigation project PETRA.  In 2001 Gleason participated in the critical platform of Documenta_11 from Kassel.  During 2010 and 2011 she was the director of the site-specific project TECOH, in collaboration with the artist Jorge Pardo.  Since 2012 she has supported the Colección Jumex and is currently the Curator in Residence of the Center for Curatorial Studies in Bard College.

The “Modern Art” curation has been recently added to the Zona MACO programming.  Why is it important to exhibit Modern Art at Zona MACO?

This is the second year that Zona MACO presents the Modern Art section.  Presenting Modern Art helps us to better understand our current time, the artistic production and the way art institutions function today.  Not to mention that it was during modernism that radical and fundamental propositions transformed our contemporary thinking, changing the face of art today.

Why is it important for the public to engage with these works?

I think that there are wonderful Modern works that have radically changed the production of Contemporary Art.  It is a treat to be able to see these historical works at Zona MACO.

What galleries or artists stand out?

The Modern Art section of the fair is very small and this allows us to have amazing projects.  I think all the projects in the section can be considered highlights.
